B) What is art? According to one definition, it is the creation of something that appeals to our sense of
beauty. This definition may include painting, drawing, sculpture, and architecture, or performing arts
such as music and drama. Cultural and historical influences, as well as one’s own perception of what is
aesthetically pleasing, play a role in what one believes to be art. To some people, art is the depiction of an
object – a painting or sculpture of a person, for example. For others, art may be a blank canvas, or a piece
of chalk.(...)
The Postmodern era, has featured innovative artistic styles such as Pop Art (which includes work
by Andy Warhol), Minimalism, and Conceptualism. Since the 1960s, Conceptualism has grown in
popularity. This style focuses more on the idea or ‘concept’ of art using realistic objects, rather than on art
that is created using traditional materials such as paint, canvas, stone, or clay. Whereas Warhol used a can
of beans as the basis for a painting, for example, a conceptual artist might say that the can itself is a work
of art.
Conceptualism has become an increasingly controversial art style, particularly as a result of numerous
conceptual artists winning the Turner Prize. This £20,000 award is presented annually to a British artist
under the age of fifty, in recognition of an outstanding work. Sponsored by the Tate Gallery of Britain, it is
recognized as one of Europe’s most prestigious awards for visual arts. Its aim is to promote discussion about
contemporary British art. In 2001, pop music icon Madonna presented the Turner Prize to conceptual
artist Martin Creed.
Creed’s winning work consisted of an empty room in an art gallery. Every five seconds the light in the
room turned on, and then turned off again. Creed entitled this piece of art Work # 227. Other examples
of Creed’s work include Work # 88 – a piece of paper crumpled into a ball. While some art critics have
celebrated these works for their ability to make us question our surrounding and values, others denounce
them as rubbish.
Sugestão de Respostas
According to some, Creed’s work explores the relationship between art, reality, and life. It also thought
to challenge the material value of traditional art. Creed believes that by using everyday objects, his work
gains no monetary value– unlike paintings that might eventually sell for millions.
While this explanation helps us understand the message Creed and other conceptual artists make with
their work, the question remains – is it art?

Reading
1. The pratice of marking the human body with images and designs has existed in some cultures for
thousands of years. Some markings are temporary, such as pinting henna1 on the hands feet of brides in
India, while others are permanent. The pratice of leaving a permanent mark on the skin using needles and
dye, or pigment, is know as tattoing.
2. The word tatto originates from Polynesia where, on islands like Taihiti and Samoa, the tribal tattoo
traditionally played a significant role in the organization and interacton2 of the people. Ancient Maori
3 people painted their faces with charcoal 4 before battles. eventually, the markings were made permanent
by tattooing so that they did not have t be reapplied before each battle. Warriors without these facial
markings were referred to as’plain face’ and were considered social outcasts. (...)
3. (...) Today, tattoing is a common pratice in many parts of the world. For some people, a tattoo is simply a form of body decoration; for others, it provides a symbol of cultural or group identity. Millions of people, including 30 million in the U.S. alone, have some form of tatoo on their body. However, tattoing
may also have a negative image; in Japan, for example, a common perception of the people with tattoos is that they are associated with the Japanese mafia, or yakuza.(...)
4. (...) the stereotypical image of the tattoo parlor as a dingy6 backstreet shop is, in most cases, far from reality. A modern tattoo studio today is more likely to look lke a dentist’s office, with waiting room
walls adorned 7 with artwork. As needles are used in the tattooing procdess, cleanlines and hygiene are
of the utmost importance. The National Tatoo Association in the U.S. has over a thousands members,
and promoters the image of tattooing as a profession with high quality standards. The stereotypical image of tattooists as rebel dropouts is gradually changing. Instead, most tattoists today are regarded as professionals, trained in the art and pratice of tattooing. It is common for a tattoo artist, in fact , to work
as an apprentice for a few years with a professional tattoist before working indenpendently.
5. Millions of people around the world, many of them famous celebrities, wear their tattoos with pride.
For these people, a beautifully created tattoo can be just as much an artistic endeavor as a work of art by a Renaissance painter.
